AB Concept founders Ed Ng and Terence Ngan’s private residence in Karuizawa, Japan is both a reflection of the designers’ personal taste and thoughtfully nuanced approach towards design.

Karuizawa, a popular resort town located merely one-hour away from Tokyo by bullet train, is known for its lush forests, revitalizing waterfalls, quaint local shops and namesake whisky. Set 1,000 metres above sea level, Karuizawa is a soothing escape from the summer heat, and its seasonal residents include the Japanese imperial family as well as John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Ed and Terence visited Karuizawa for the first time in 2005 and immediately fell in love with its character and environment. In contrast to the bustling energy of Hong Kong, where the duo is based, Karuizawa provides a complementary getaway that offers both cultural and spiritual leisure.

Unlike a client project, the Karuizawa residence did not come with a design brief or deadline. It took years to plan and build, and what they call a “home” is still in the making. Ed and Terence chose to build a house against mountains for its elevated and ever-changing perspectives. The foremost practical challenge is Japan’s propensity to earthquakes, which required some complex engineering to manage. Apart from that, Ed and Terence did not follow a master design plan or blueprint. Instead, they envisioned what they would like to be surrounded by then gathered materials, objects and art that they love and have collected to compose every detail of the house.

The most prominent feature of the Karuizawa residence is the ample use of wood. Ed shares, “We used Japanese cedar wood because of its texture and the peacefulness it exudes, and most importantly its scent.” In addition, the designers chose cedar and stone as the main materials for the house so that the architecture blends into its surroundings. 

 轻井泽住宅最显著的特点是充分利用木头。伍仲匡分享道：“我们使用日本雪松木是因为它的质地和它散发出的静谧，最重要的是它的气味。”此外，设计师选择雪松木和石头作为房子的主要材料，这样房子与周围的环境融为了一体。

The interior, 200 m2 in total area spanning two stories, is filled with vintage furniture, found pieces, design objects and artworks. The common areas include the foyer, the living room, the dining room, and an open kitchen. There are three bedrooms, one of which is converted into a den and one into a guest room. There is also a characteristically Japanese onsen bathroom. Last but not least, there is a detached floating deck with an outdoor fireplace, making it a perfect place to immerse oneself into nature.

住宅有两层，室内总面积为200平方米，摆放有古董家具、装置品、设计品和艺术品。公共区域包括门厅、客厅、餐厅和开放式厨房。有三间卧室，其中一间改造成书房，另一间改造成客房。还有一个典型的日本温泉浴室。最后，还有一个独立的悬浮甲板与室外壁炉，这个场所能让人完美地沉浸于大自然中。

vintage dining table purchased directly from the family. The blue painting by Juri Markkula strikes a sharp contrast against the wooden walls.

The living room furniture comes from various origins. The colourful rug is by Zollanvari, on which stands a coffee table by Finn Juhl. A favourite of Ed and Terence’s, the kidney-shaped desk by the window is made of antique organic rosewood, and it has a revolving door to store their whiskey collection. The circular wooden sculpture by Paulo Rocha Das Neve by the other window connects the indoor with the nature outside.

Downstairs in the den, one might spot immediately a very special Frank Lloyd Wright taliesin II lamp made of Japanese Aizu paulownia and gold leaf. It is one of the only ten special editions which commemorates the legendary designer’s 150th birth anniversary. The blue chair is by Rolf Benz, and the desk and the cabinet here are fine examples of the vintage pieces that Ed and Terence have stumbled upon during their travels all around the world.

The most exceptional section of this residence is the floating deck that features a pair of Sebastian Herkner Mbrace armchairs and RB73 Corten Steel fireplace. Sitting at the terrace, one is fully surrounded by the forest and has an unobstructed view of the surroundings. The terrace is the best spot in the house to experience the distinct four seasons in Karuizawa.

The Karuizawa residence manifests Ed and Terence’s organic yet sophisticated design approach which draws inspirational elements from their travels and immediate surroundings.
